MATUNGA FOOD TRAIL #Mumbai I've been meaning to MATUNGA FOOD TRAIL #Mumbai

I've been meaning to post this for a while, so here goes - my list of the best places to eat at in Matunga/King Circle area (plus what to order there):

📍 Amba Bhavan (2-3) - hands-down my favourite spot. I always get their ulundu dosa and their filter kaapi is the best on the circle (this is not up for discussion, so don't @ me on this, lol).

📍 Idli House (4) - has relocated from the circle to outside Matunga station, but their menu remains the same (and excellent). As the name suggests, they only make idlis (and a couple of other seasonal delicacies like modak and patoli). I recommend their Kanchipuram and khotto idlis.

📍 Ram Ashraya (5) - opens super early and there's a long queue at lunchtime and on weekends, and justifiably so! Love their ghee-laden upma and sheera (their neer dosa is another fave).

📍 Arya Bhavan (6) - has relocated inside the shopping centre being built opposite Matunga station. I always get their paniyaram (I don't think any other joint makes it in the area, but I may be wrong). Also, love their idiyappam and stew, and this is a weird thing to rave about, but their buttermilk/chhaas is amazing!

📍 Cafe Madras (7) - another place that's almost always packed (avoid on Sundays unless you're willing to wait for ages). Get their fluffy idlis with white butter and podi and Madras dahi misal (in picture) and thank me later.

Apart from food, here are a couple of unmissable things to do in #Matunga:

🌸 Check out the flower market (8)

☕ Buy filter kaapi powder at Mysore Concerns (9)

📚 Browse for books at one of the many booksellers (10)

1-2: @artandcharlie is showing ‘Dear Tereza…’ a solo exhibit by @saviyalopes until May 27

3-4: @wakaimumbai has opened a new outlet in Bandra (their Fort outlet is shut and will relocate to another SoBo location soon). We tried a bunch of dishes from the menu curated by chef @parvez_khan2706 - some standouts were the ninniku (garlic) truffle maki, salmon tartare, duck hoisin gyoza, and basque matcha cheesecake with boba sauce #hosted

5-6: Dropped by at the recently opened @thegelatobar_ where @chefrachigupta churns out Italian-style gelato. Loved my pistachio+dark chocolate (my standard gelato order in Italy!) but the berry cheesecake that my husband picked was neither berry nor cheesecake

7-8: There's a new cafe at Bloom Boutique Bandra. @records.coffee_ has good coffee plus an eclectic vinyl collection in collaboration with @therevolverclub #coffeelovers #cafesoftheworld

9: New books at an old favourite @teltrilogy p.s. co-founder @ahalya12 has impeccable taste and helped me pick out some interesting books for my little niece

10: Bonus cat pic, coz why not? #catsofinstagram
Finally made it to @akaraart's new space #AkaraCon Finally made it to @akaraart's new space #AkaraContemporary yesterday #Mumbai #bombaymerijaan

The gallery — dedicated to international and Indian contemporary art — is housed in a beautiful 100-year-old heritage structure on Madam Cama Road, Colaba. The inaugural exhibition 'Let Me Tell You A Story' is a two-part exhibition curated by Lisbon-based curator, Luiza Teixeira De Freitas (@lulytf) and brings together significant artists from around the world who are showing in India for the first time.

Absolutely loved the vast 3,000-sq.ft. high-ceilinged space with white-washed walls, decorative arches, and floral motifs on stained glass windows (the gallery is designed by @rajiv_saini_associates). Some artworks that stood out for me were by Dhruva Mistry (4), Keita Miyazaki (5), Mona Hatoum (6), Oscar Murillo (7), and Haegue Yang (8).

The exhibition continues until June 10, go check it out.

Inaugurated a couple of years after India gained independence, the 1,200-seater single-screen Liberty Cinema was the first cinema dedicated to Hindustani films. It was one of the last buildings to be constructed in the Art Deco style. Sadly, it's shuttered now but continues to stand as a testament not just to the glory days of Indian cinema but also the architectural heritage of the city.
Looking for a quick getaway from #Mumbai? SaffronS Looking for a quick getaway from #Mumbai? SaffronStays Ahilya Waters by Kosha Villas is a great option near #Lonavala.

This plush villa comes with sweeping views of Pawana Lake from the living room and all three bedrooms as well as from the indoor swimming pool (which is absolutely #poolgoals!) All the living spaces are expansive and filled with natural light through floor-to-ceiling windows. There's also a large terrace from where you can see Tungi Fort looming up right behind the villa. Meals are available at extra cost — both Indian and global cuisines — and are delicious and generously portioned. Staff is warm and hospitable.

Ahilya Waters is the perfect place for a famjam or a get-together with friends. There are two other villas (2-bedroom and 3-bedroom) on the same property so if you're looking to accommodate a large group, you can book the three villas together.

Note that the property is not pet-friendly or wheelchair-friendly. Also, the last-mile access road is still getting done, so be prepared for a bumpy ride.
