The mosaics of Madaba This unassuming church fac The mosaics of Madaba

This unassuming church facade hides a historical treasure - the Madaba Mosaic Map, which is the oldest surviving depiction of the Holy Land. While the current Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George in Madaba, Jordan dates to the 1800s, the mosaic map itself goes back to the 6th century. It was uncovered when the new church was being built on the site of an older one. The map depicts Lebanon, Jerusalem, Palestine, the Dead Sea, the Nile Delta, etc (pics 2-3). In the city of Madaba, you will find numerous shops selling all kinds of modern mosaics; they are also happy to show you the process (pics 4-6).

About 10km north of Madaba stands Mount Nebo where Moses saw the Promised Land before his death. From the summit, you get a sweeping panorama of the West Bank, Jerusalem, and the Dead Sea. The site holds a modern Memorial to Moses (pic 7), built over an older church that goes back to the 4th century. Inside, you can see stunning mosaics that date to 530 CE (pics 8-10). These are amongst the best preserved mosaics in Jordan, and they depict vividly colourful and detailed hunting and pastoral scenes with intricate geometric borders — it's quite a sight to behold!

I’m a sucker for Roman ruins, so naturally, I wa I’m a sucker for Roman ruins, so naturally, I was thrilled to visit Jerash in Jordan. It is one of the best-preserved Roman cities outside Italy. We spent nearly three hours traipsing around the archaeological site, wandering amongst towering columns and pounding sun-baked stone streets that have been trodden for nearly 2,000 years.

Entering through Hadrian’s Arch felt like stepping straight into the Roman Empire. We wandered through the Hippodrome and the Oval Plaza, along the colonnaded Cardo Maximus (its stones still etched with chariot grooves), past the towering Temple of Artemis, and into both the South and North Theatres.

The complex of three Byzantine churches was a highlight, particularly its mosaic floors. We ended at the Temple of Zeus, its hilltop location offering sweeping views over the ruins and the surrounding valley. It's the perfect place to take in the scale and grandeur of ancient Jerash.

Surreal is the only way to describe Wadi Rum, Jord Surreal is the only way to describe Wadi Rum, Jordan. No wonder everything from Star Wars to Dune was shot in this other-worldly landscape. Zoom into pic 5 to see prehistoric petroglyphs and inscriptions on the rock.

Three new cafes to try in Mumbai this month! 📍 Three new cafes to try in Mumbai this month!

📍@pleasepardonourfrench: Opened just yesterday in a Ballard Estate bylane, this is @poojadhingra's newest venture, a charming French cafe, with a touch of the boudoir. They're currently serving desserts and beverages, while the savoury menu launches by end of the month. Expect salads, eggs, French toast, and more. Love that the desserts are not super-sweet and have unexpected elements (basil oil laced in the strawberry+cream, yes please!) My passion fruit cold brew came in a wine glass, felt like I was having a cheeky drink in the middle of the day 🥂

📍@thepure_kitchen: I have been a fan of the healthy but delicious eats that the Chembur cloud kitchen delivered, and now they have come up with a new cafe in Bandra. Opened last month, this tiny but bright space is perfect for quick bites - love their Vietnamese rice paper rolls, open-face sandwiches, pesto pasta, and orange cake. Don't miss getting your caffeine (or matcha) fix from the cute takeaway window ☕

📍 @chorusworld.cafe: On the second floor of the @chorusworld atelier, this chic cafe brings craft onto the plate. Like the signature Chorus Quilt with a patchwork of five different dips, the Lace & Leaf Salad with embroidered garnish, moreish pastas, and scrumptious desserts in really pretty serveware. Gonna drop by for their high tea soon! 🧁

Bonus 📍@bare.bombay: Opened at Altimus, Worli in December, this hybrid space combines a @boojeecafe, a contemporary art gallery, a bar shaking up fab cocktails, and a minimalistic dining room. Chef @aman.singhal23's inventive plates are a treat, whether it's the arty crisps & dips, the meaty lion's mane shawarma, nori kulcha, and more. The dessert program is by @chefbakhtiani, and you better believe when I  tell you that we wiped the chocolate terrine clean 🍽️
