About Me

delishdirection

I went to Greece on a holiday, but I couldn't NOT I went to Greece on a holiday, but I couldn't NOT write about it! So here are two food stories that were published recently.

For @livemintlounge, I wrote an ode to bougatsa (pic 2), a flaky filo pastry pie stuffed with mildly sweet semolina custard that I absolutely fell in love with.

And for @the.gourmet.edit, I reminisced about all the food I scarfed in Athens, including on a particularly gluttonous tour with @athenswalkstours; pic 12 is of my guide Katerina demonstrating how to drink ouzo correctly 🇬🇷

Mandu moments! This sleepy little town just 2 hou Mandu moments!

This sleepy little town just 2 hours from Indore surprised me with its plethora of historic monuments — from the hilltop Roopmati Pavilion and the pretty-in-pink-sandstone Baz Bahadur Palace to the imposing Jahaz Mahal and the angular precision of Hindola Mahal, plus the many-pillared Jami Masjid, Hoshang Shah's tomb (India's first one in marble), and much more.

Another highlight for me was tasting the Malwa speciality, dal paniya (last 2 pix). It's similar to dal bati, but the bati is made with maize flour and is roasted wrapped in leaves over dung cake fire. Loved the smoky flavours paired with spicy dal and some delicious aloo sabzi on the side #delishtravels #delisheats

Where to stay:

📍Budget spot - @labboozcafeandlodge with basic but cosy rooms that once were soldiers' quarters in the fort's gate

📍Splurge-worthy - @ahilya.fort for the royal treatment inside the actual fort

Indore ka khana 🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽 Everyone Indore ka khana 🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽

Everyone I spoke to about Indore had one unanimous recommendation — egg benjo at Johny Hot Dog. It sounded like omelette pao, so I wondered what the big deal was until I rolled up one night at the famous Chappan Dukan, a food court of sorts with a long line of street food vendors. I was handed a thick, soft bun (flatter and larger than the Bombay pao),, lightly toasted, and stuffed with a spicy omelette.. There were sliced onions on the side and a dollop each of ketchup and green chutney. One bite and I was a believer! In fact, it was my favourite of all the street food I tried in Indore — and I ate a lot!

Apart from the egg benjo, Chappan has many other iconic eats like garadu (winter speciality of deep-fried cubes of suran or yam tossed with chaat masala and served with a squeeze of lime), khopra pattice (coconut potato filling), batla kachori, kulfi, etc.

The next night  at Sarafa Bazaar, I had some fantastic dahi bada at Joshi Dahi Bada House, where the owner impressed me with his masala technique (see video 9). He also gave me a second helping of dahi, probably coz of my last name, lol.

Other Sarafa delights included chhole tikiya, bhutte ka kees, sabudana khichdi (quite different from what we're used to in Mumbai), and the creamiest rabri I've ever eaten . Plus jamun shots to wash it all down!

And no Indori food list would be complete without the breakfast staple of poha and jalebi; I had an aloo kachori on the side too, coz why not?

Thanks @akash_nagar_photography for taking me around Sarafa and @sayajihotelindore for the Chappan trail, also @lubna_amir & @anuradha_medhora for all your recommendations #delishtravels #delisheats

The October issue of @travelandleisureindia featur The October issue of @travelandleisureindia features a story that's rather special to me — about my experience deep in the Peruvian Amazon with @rainforestexpeditions, @perutravel.me, and @oftripsandtales. It's a beautiful 8-page spread with some stunning photography by @carlosgonzales.peru (and others). That's me hand-modelling in the first pic and the last photo in the feature is shot by me.

Incidentally, becoming a citizen scientist for the groundbreaking Wired Amazon programme by Rainforest Expeditions is listed as one of @lonelyplanet's "Best Experiences in 2026". More information in the feature.

Thank you @abhanjdeo @samreen43 @alfeajamal for the opportunity to tell this story. And 'm so stoked to have a print byline in T+L after a while! #delishtravels
A few glimpses of Thessaloniki 🇬🇷 Greece's A few glimpses of Thessaloniki 🇬🇷

Greece's second-largest city is a vibrant port located at the crossroads of East and West. It has everything from ruins of Roman-era arches and palaces to stunning Byzantine churches and lively Ottoman-style markets.

Don't miss visiting the Upper Town (Ano Poli) with its winding cobbled streets, traditional houses, and panoramic views. It's a steep climb, so I recommend taking the bus up (just €0.6) and walking back down to the city centre.

Continue on further to Thessaloniki's highlight — a lovely waterfront promenade where you can catch a glorious sunset over the Aegean #delishtravels

Athens beyond the Acropolis... Here's what to see Athens beyond the Acropolis...

Here's what to see and do in the Greek capital after you have visited its star attraction:

1 - Temple of Hephaestus, a remarkably well-preserved temple that dates to 5BC

2 - Hadrian's Gate, a monumental gateway built to honour Hadrian's many benefactions to the city

3 - Temple of Zeus of which only a few pillars remain but it was once the largest temple in Greece

4 - Hadrian's Library, remains of what was once the largest library in Athens

5 - Agora of Athens, ancient marketplace

6 - Catch the Changing of the Guards in front of the Greek Parliament Building (at Syntagma Square), which takes place daily at the top of every hour, plus a more elaborate parade every Sunday at 11 am

7 - The National Garden, which was designed in the 19th century as the royal family’s private garden, and is today a much-beloved green oasis in the city

8 - Zappeion, a large, palatial building in the national garden

9-11 - The so-called Athenian Trilogy i.e. three elegant, Neoclassical buildings comprising the National Library, University, and Academy of Athens

12 - Visit the Varvakios central municipal market to buy local produce

13 - Monastiraki square, central square with many bars and restaurants, plus a Sunday flea market

14 - Admire the street art
