About Me

delishdirection

I have always been a sucker for ancient Greece. As I have always been a sucker for ancient Greece. As a kid, I had this hardbound book of Greek myths that I used to read (and re-read). So naturally, visiting the Acropolis and the Parthenon was pretty high up on my list. And I finally made the trip happen!

It was not without challenges though - the day of my scheduled Acropolis tour, various unions in Greece called for a general strike to protest high taxes and longer working hours. This meant that public transport wasn't available and I had to walk a fair bit to get to the Acropolis . Which itself opened at 10 am instead of 8am as is usual. Obviously, multiple morning tours converged at the same time and the site was jam packed. But the queues mostly moved in an orderly fashion. There was forecast of clouds and rain too, but the weather held, as you can tell from the photos.

I had a wonderful guide as well who regaled us with the legends of Athena, Poseidon, Zeus, and the rest of the pantheon. While you can explore the site on your own or with an audio guide, I recommend taking a guided tour. And don't miss visiting the Acropolis Museum later - it has one of the most stunning collections in history!

Munich eats and drinks — from traditional Bavari Munich eats and drinks — from traditional Bavarian fare to Italian, Japanese, and Michelin-starred plates, you will find everything here. Not to mention my favourite haunt, Viktualienmarkt, a 19th-century farmers' market turned into a gourmet paradise.

So if you're heading to Munich for Oktoberfest (until October 5 this year) or for a holiday, check out my @ellegourmetindia guide on where to eat, drink, and make merry in the city, link in bio. Except the lead photo in the article, all the featured images are mine!

Eating and drinking in #Nuremberg Tried traditio Eating and drinking in #Nuremberg

Tried traditional dishes  such as Nürnberger Bratwurst (local sausage protected by EU law), Schäufele (pork shoulder with potato dumpling and gravy), and Rotbier (red beer). Had some German-style tapas too. Plus delish ice cream, coz it was sweltering!

And of course, my favourite thing to do - drinking coffee in cute cafes 😍

A taste of Riesling's terroir in the Rheingau, Ger A taste of Riesling's terroir in the Rheingau, Germany

With just 3,000 hectares, the Rheingau is amongst the smallest of Germany's 13 designated winemaking regions. But it is here that the Riesling finds its best expression, making up more than 75% of wine produced in the region. And the Eberbach Abbey is where it all began. On my recent trip to Germany, I visited the 12th-century abbey, toured its wine cellars, and saw their vintage wine presses (he oldest dating to 1668 - pic 8).

Later, I visited the family-run Baron Knyphausen Winery (since 1818), located in Eltville am Rhein (the largest town in the Rheingau) and tasted some of the finest Rieslings the region has to offer. And because this is Germany, the food pairing was pretzel (what else?) and spundekäse, a paprika-laced fresh cream cheese dip. Read more about the Rheingau Rieslings in my feature for @livemintlounge, link in bio #published

Hello from the top of Germany!  The country's hi Hello from the top of Germany!

The country's highest mountain, Zugspitze is easily accessible from Munich and makes for a great day trip from the city. I took a train from the central station to the ski town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen from where a blue-and-white cog-wheel train took me up to Zugspitzplatt or Zugspitze Glacier Plateau. There are a couple of restaurants here, including the vegetarian @gletscher2600 where I had a 'cheeseburger' on the sun terrace.

The final ascent to the summit was via a cable car, which brought me to the massive viewing platform with a stunning vista of the mountain and the surrounding Alps. Zugspitze straddles the border between Germany and Austria, so I hopped across the platform to the Austrian side for a look. On the return, I took the cable car all the way down to Eibsee, the scenic blue-green lake at the foot of the mountain.

Glimpses of Munich on a fun @rikschaguide tour! O Glimpses of Munich on a fun @rikschaguide tour!

On a sunny Saturday afternoon, I hopped into an e-rickshaw at Marienplatz and went on a joyride  around the city.  My guide Jan (who is a carpenter by profession and does these tours on the weekend) drove me through the English Garden, which incidentally is bigger than NYC's Central Park. We stopped to see the surfers at the Eisbach canal and later for a coffee at @fraeuleingrueneis, a kiosk-cafe located in what used to be a ladies toilet! Exiting the park, we rode past the river Isar, taking in the sights and even stopped for an ice cream. Overall, it was a fun way to explore the city and I would highly recommend it.

A majestic 19th-century residence that once belong A majestic 19th-century residence that once belonged to the royal family of Bhopal, Jehan Numa Palace is a charming, intimate heritage hotel in the heart of the city. I loved its Neoclassical meets British Colonial architecture, the period detailing, and the genuine warmth of service. My Imperial Room was spacious and well-appointed, but my favourite part was the outdoor sit-out overlooking the swimming pool and horse-riding track — I made sure I woke up early to see the horses trot around on their morning rounds!

Meals were stellar, whether at the Italian/Mediterranean La Kuchina or breakfast at Shahnama. But the highlight was the sumptuous General's Table at Under The Mango Tree, which featured signature dishes from the erstwhile royal family of Bhopal.

Thanks @jehannumapalace for such a lovely experience and @prstudio.2014 for organising this press trip with a super-fun bunch (last pic).
