About Me

Not just another monastery! This is where I stayed Not just another monastery! This is where I stayed in Ribeira Sacra, #Galicia - Parador de Santo Estevo is located in a restored Benedictine monastery, the origins of which date to the 10th century.

It has three spectacular cloisters, all in different styles — Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance. Large parts of the monastery have been restored, yet most of its historical structure (and essence) remain, contrasting very well with its contemporary interiors.

Rooms are in what used to be the monks' cells but are quite spacious and have been fitted out with all the modern amenities. The hotel also has a spa and an outdoor Jacuzzi, the latter with views of the forest surrounding the monastery. It's an absolutely stunning and unique property #hosted
One of the most beautiful monasteries that I have One of the most beautiful monasteries that I have been to, Monastery of Santa María de Oseira in #Galicia dates to the 12th century (although it was partly reconstructed in 1966). This was a royal monastery and features many impressive attractions like the chapter house known as Las Palmeras, which is covered with star vaults and supported by twisted columns that appear like swaying palms (pic 9). Sound on for the last video!

Guided visits are available 5 times a day - these are in Spanish but this is the only way to see the monastery from inside.

I had one night in #Kolkata and decided to book at I had one night in #Kolkata and decided to book at @raajkutir, an IHCL SeleQtions hotel, which is well located near Salt Lake area.

It's a new-built property but designed on the lines of a traditional Bengali ‘Raajbari’ (a stately manor house). I had a spacious deluxe room adorned with vintage Bengali-themed artefacts. The king-size four-poster bed was comfy and the three-fixture bathroom came with premium amenities.

I thought the morning and evening rituals (classical flute rendition and sandhya aarti+bauli performance respectively) were nice touches. They even have a tea and jhaalmuri counter in the courtyard in the evenings!

Details about food coming up in the next post. Overall, I had a great experience and a special mention of their warm hospitality and service.
No prizes for the guessing the city! #Kolkata #W No prizes for the guessing the city!

Chandernagore / Chandannagar in #Hooghly district Chandernagore / Chandannagar in #Hooghly district of #WestBengal

This former French colony was a flourishing trade outpost from Bengal to Europe for everything from opium and silk to cotton, rice, and sugar. The British captured Chandernagore but the French won it back and it was only in 1952 that it was legally transferred from French rule to India.

I really loved this charming town with its tree-lined riverside promenade (called the Strand) and its French-era buildings. The Chandernagore Museum is housed in what was the French Governor's bungalow - inside, it's a treasure trove of antique furniture, coins, books, and artefacts.

I couldn't leave without trying the jalbhara sondesh (pic 8), which was evidently invented in Chandannagar at @jalbhara_surjya_kumar_modak in the early 1800s.
Katra Mosque, #Murshidabad #WestBengal Built in 1 Katra Mosque, #Murshidabad #WestBengal

Built in 1723-24, this brick mosque and madrasa also served as caravanserai and a hub of trade. It originally had four octagonal corner towers and multiple domes. But two towers and some domes were destroyed in an earthquake in 1897. The mosque also houses the tomb of Nawab Murshid Quli Khan.
